Abstract: Combustion and decomposition properties in polyurethane (PU) modified by flame retardant were investigated by using the electron spin resonance (ESR) spin trapping technique and thermogravimetry (TG), the long-lived gas phase radicals in combustion and decomposition products of polyurethane were studied. It was shown that the concentration of radicals in combustion was reduced by adding hexachlorotriphosphazene containing chlorine, and heat decomposition in polyurethane was also accelerated by phosphazene. Appropriate phosphazene compounds could improve name retardant property of PU and inhibit long-lived radicals production in PU combustion.
