Abstract: Spirits leakage fire leads to huge hazard in spirits-making industry. This paper studied pool and spray spirits fire suppressions by water mist with experiments. Combustion properties of spirits under different volume concentrations were investigated, including both pool fire and spray fire. With volume concentration decreases from 95% to 30%, the highest temperature reduction of pool fire is unconspicuous while flame height decreases obviously. With volume concentration decreases to 70%, steady spray flame can not be formed. Under the designed mist with mean diameter 0.35mm, leakage fires are all suppressed effectively. Time needed to extinguish pool fire is just about 1-2 s, while 5-8 s is needed to suppress spray fires. Flame enhancing exists after mist activation. Oxygen displacement and kinetic effects may act as the main mechanisms in flame extinguishing stage. Following the results summarized here, water mist would be a good choice for spirits production processes.
