Abstract: A new method was developed in this paper to characterize the classification characteristic for fire smoke. In this method we take the ratio of extinction coefficients of two known wavelengths as the essential character of smoke. Our research indicates that this ratio is only determined by the distribution of particle dimension, the average particle size and the refractive index of the smoke, and that the ratio can avoid the influence of the smoke concentration. Thus it will be calculable after some simple optical measurements of the smoke. This method is simple, fast, accurate and ideal to characterize the classification characteristic of smoke.
