Abstract: In this article, we synthesize phosphate-graphite oxide (GO) intercalation compounds using two different methods. The expanded interlayer distances of graphite oxide after synthesis was evidenced by X-ray diffraction, which was favorable for intercalation reaction. The fact that no grains of phosphates was observed by scanning electron microscopy, along with the presence of Na, P, and the change of C/O ratio detected by energy dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), and sufficient exfoliation images given by AFM, showed that phosphate intercalation compounds had been synthesized. It needs to specially point out that, we find the change of binding energy and significant displacements before and after intercalation reaction by valence band in XPS. It gives the differences more directly in different phosphate treated graphite oxide. At last, thermal analysis reveals an enhanced thermal stability of the phosphate intercalated graphite oxide. It is a facile method to obtain well exfoliation GO and these thermally enhanced compounds have a very promising application in the flame retardant for polypropylene.
